Adversity and the Greatest Moments in Life

By Steve Gahagen

Last season, when playing the Virginia Cavaliers in November, the Louisville Cardinals football team created one of those memorable fan moments when you find yourself high-fiving or even hugging people you have never met. It's a strange practice that we would rarely do in any other setting.

The reason it was memorable was because of adversity. With the game slipping away against what was considered a lesser opponent, the Cards rallied back. A long touchdown throw and a touchdown run of over 70 yards in the final minutes sent the late-night crowd into a frenzy.

Though we prefer comfort over adversity, adversity creates the environment for memorable moments because we need to have courage to persevere and overcome. The greatest moments for any team, whether athletic or in an organization, are when they scale the mountain and accomplish something that seemed impossible.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Share three moments of adversity you or your team overcame, creating a powerful moment of celebration and exhilaration.

  2. Though we crave comfort, why is comfort not our friend?

  3. How could you leverage your strengths to overcome or persevere through the challenges you are facing today, either at work or in your personal life?
